Garrett Miller and Eric Fischer of Mapbox loaded a host of information from RunKeeper to visualize in excess of 1 million walks, runs and bike rides in a variety of cities around the world.

The line colouring indicates route length

Short is blue to pink
Mid-length is white
Longer routes (25 km and more) are coloured in yellow

From an urban planning perspective these maps can show clear patterns of activity which can be leveraged to develop investment plans and other infrastructure initiatives. Coupled with Beacon and other technologies it is possible to derive even greater insights into municipal traffic patterns, be they on foot or vehicle based.
